A Study on Tai Mong

Abstract
The study has aimed to give objective observation and evaluation to the nature of "Tai Mong¢¥ which has long been firmly believed among Koreans especially in women as the dream of indicating or forecasting the child bearing and has functions to, differentiate forthcoming baby¢¥s sex.
1504 dreams were collected from 912 housewives living in a southern province of¢¥ Korea and the content of the dream was classified into several cathegories and. discussed in various aspects.
Most of the informants believed "Tai Mong" strongly and they dreamt "Tai Mong" ¢¥ around 1st trimester. 3 cases had supplemented the dream far after delivery, 90 cases: was dreamt [before she knew pregnant. Many husbands, grandparents and even neighbours gave "Tai Mong" to the pregnant who has¢¥nt. Most of them dreamtarchaic symbols and contents that can be classified as:1. animals, 2. fruits, 3. plant. and vegetable, 4. sun, moon, and stars, 5. fish, 6. gold, silver and other metals, 7. birds, 8. boy, girl, 9. flowers, and the dream contents were characterized by active or passive possession of such objects. The tendencies of retrospective falsifications. and rationalization were suggested in reviewing "Tai Mong," especially when the informants found the delivered baby was a female and not a male.
Discussion was given to the possibility of appearing the fertility symbols in the dream around the moment of pregnancy according to Jung?s hypothesis on the synchronicity phenomena, for the pregnancy is not mere a physiological changebut may also stimulate unfarthomable psychological resources. However, theculturally, determined collective attitude of the Korean toward the sex of the new born child may also be contributed to the belief in "Tai Mong."
